PAPE DIOUF : «A GOOD LAUNCH PAD»

Satisfied with the performance of his side against Auxerre, the president warns, however, that at the start of the season the team have : "to keep their feet on the ground".

Pape, the team renewed their ties with the public in style tonight …
It was a great match, that’s for sure and we won with room to spare. I think the main thing that came out of tonight’s match is that we won’t be talking very much about the OM defence: will it or won’t it hold? At least that debate is over for the moment. Overall, we’re happy with how things are going here in Marseille. People were waiting for us; the public was acquired to our cause and didn’t hide their enthusiasm and fervor. We didn’t want to mess up our first game at home. We did better than we had hoped for, despite a shaky first half, we got the result we wanted.

Were you satisfied with the first performance at the Vélodrome of the new recruits?
I’m not going to concentrate on individual performances, as that’s not what we are looking for. I’ll just look at the performance of the team as a whole, and looking at that side of things we seem to have found the balance we were lacking, in attack as well as in defence. I’m happier about that than studying the performance of one individual player.

Tonight, OM are second in the League, things have started well …
Second place is just an anecdote; let’s hope we’re there on the last day of the season. After the game against Rennes, I didn’t want to draw any conclusions; it has to be the same tonight. We have to keep our feet on the ground and not think that we are taking the place of Lyon and playing for the title … This result simply shows us a number of positive sides to the team. It will give the squad a lot of confidence and is a good launch pad for the season, but there are 36 games to go you know! It would be very imprudent to start making plans or predictions after tonight’s game.
