Sylvain Wiltord is an OM player. The French international was allowed to leave on a free by Rennes. He has signed a six month contract with Olympique de Marseille.
In Sylvain Wiltord, OM have enrolled the services of a player who’s career has been full of success. With his 309 matches in the L1 and his fruitful years at Arsenal, the 34 year old forward has experienced and just about won everything. Four times champion in France (once with Bordeaux, three times at Lyon), English champion with the Gunners on two occasions and of course winner of the Euro 2000 and finalist in the 2006 World Cup with France (92 caps), the new OM signing has a well filled out CV. He was also top scorer in the League during the 1998-99 season (22 goals).
Mandanda : «He can bring a lot to the squad. He has a huge amount of experience and is a superb player. He will bring a lot of quality to the squad. That can only be good for us.»
Bonnart : «He is a competitor and will bring a great deal to the side. On top of that, he plays down the wing so we will be able to create automatisms together.»
His career debuted in 1993 at Rennes in the L2, a club that he re-joined during the summer of 2007. Often used last season (26 matches including 15 in the first eleven and 6 goals), he has not played so much this season under Guy Lacombe (6 times coming on as a substitute). «He is an experienced player who has a good influence within the dressing room and has an exemplary mentality , judged Erik Gerets on Thursday of the player, all the information I have received about him has been positive, he will bring a lot to the squad.»
An out and out striker at the start of his career, Wiltord gradually moved out of the centre becoming a great player down the wing or as a supporting attacker, a profile which should be very useful to OM.
