M’Bami : « Not going to give up »

Modeste M’Bami wants to finish off the season with a title in order to share the experience with his team-mates and to offer it to a club, a town and the supporters that are always behind them. Just this morning, there were over 300 supporters at the La Commanderie.

There is a great feeling of excitement around the team at the moment?
It’s normal. We are coming to the end of the season and everyone can see that we want to win. They are getting behind us, to give us strength. When you see them, like we did upon arriving in Lille on Saturday, you would have thought we were in Marseille. When you see that many people at La Commanderie, the airport and the hotel, it does give you more strength to carry on. When we stepped out on to the pitch, we could see that our fans were already present. Everyone is beginning to believe that we can do it. We mustn’t let up.

Are OM playing with champions form?
I hope so. Everyone said that if we won these two matches then we would have gone a long way to becoming champions. We won yesterday, but we also sent out a message, Lille hadn’t lost at home for a long time and we showed that we could keep on winning away from Marseille. I think we sent out a strong message to all of our rivals. There are five matches left to go and we aren’t going to give anyone an inch.

We get the feeling that anything can happen with OM?
There are five matches to go and we have a five point lead, before Bordeaux’s match on Wednesday. It’s now or never. That gives me strength before our matches. We have the impression that we can go down in the history of the club. The supporters have been waiting for this a long time and so have the players. I was at Paris for three years and played in the Champions League and today, I have the chance of becoming champion with OM.

Is there a big difference between Paris and Marseille?
Yes, there is a difference in the enthusiasm surrounding the club. Paris is the capital, it’s all about business there. Here in Marseille, everyone is behind the team, kids have season tickets and they grow up with the club. When we go out to by some bread, everyone talks to us about football, they encourage us and believe in us. We’re not going to let up in any way, shape or form. We can see that when we go behind in a game, we fight back. There is a frame of mind that wasn’t necessarily there before. The merit goes to the coach, as he has been able to get the whole club mobilised. There is only one frame of mind within the squad now.
