You have chosen Benoît Cheyrou as your Player of the Year 2008-09. A great reward for the club's best passer this season. As a bonus we offer you his goals, a wallpaper to download and your reactions.
The result could seem surprising but it is a reward for consistency. You have voted Benoît Cheyrou OM player of the year 2008-09, despite a close race with the forward Mamadou Niang. But, the midfielders crown suffers no contestation, taking 30% of the approximate 145.000 votes cast by the readers of OM.net, winning nearly 4000 more votes than the Senegalese international. In only his second season at OM, the player was one of the main reasons that OM managed to reach second place in the L1.
An anchorman and corner stone of the midfield with 33 starts in the L1 and a place in the UNFP L1 team of the season, just like in 2007-08.
A real team player, always putting the work of the group to the forefront, he will not be able to hide from this individual reward. And if is main contribution to OM’s play was his role in the middle of the park, the former Auxerre player has also turned into a decisive goal scorer.

Whether it was in Europe against Bergen or Ajax or in the L1 against Lille, Grenoble and Saint-Étienne. We should not, either, forget his seven decisive passes in the league, making him OM’s specialist in the matter, just ahead of Mamadou Niang.

The mist should be lifted from the Cheyrou’s hard work throughout the season, as much as a defensive midfielder as a player who started of attacking moves. He really should be in the National side as he is, possibly, the player that they are lacking.

Benoît Cheyrou deserves the title of OM player of the season, he has been the real motor of the team all throughout the year. His capability of always being able to play the ball forward, despite his relativel deep position, was a great factor in OM becoming the best attack in the league. This never stopped him putting in the necessary work defensively and he managed to recuperate a lot of balls from the feet of his opponents. Best passer in the side, frequently putting in excellent performances, very important when Niang and Cana were injured, voted for the second consecutive year into the team of the season by his peers …

Benoît is a midfielder with rare qualities including the unthankful task of always being in the shadows, you barely notice he is on the pitch is work is so unspectacular, but oh how decisive and important in terms of recuperating the ball and moving it forward towards the oppositions goal.

Apart from is incredible consistency, Benoît has been able, thanks to his desire, courage and hardwork, prove that he is an instant name on the first team sheet!!! His desire puts OM on the right track in each match and his willpower to always want to do better is pushing him closer to the National side. Whatever, a big thank you Benoît, a great player and a cracking bloke!!!

There is no doubting that Cheyrou was the man of the season. It is impossible not to see how important he is to our system of play, from what he brings to attacking phases, his precise passing and shooting, as well as his fantastic defensive play. Certainly he had a poor period and was dropped by Gerets, but he soon got back to his best form, pulling the side up with him. Bravo for this great season, maybe our National team manager should take a closer look at him!

One thing is for sure, the community made no mistake: Cheyrou is the best. The work that he puts in is rounded off by his great technique and abnegation; not only a defensive midfielder but also a playmaker with a fantastic range of passing, on top of great shooting capabilities from 18/25 metres out. Of all the players, if we had to keep one it would be him: thank you Benoît.
A model team-mate, tireless metronome with fantastic technique, Benoît Cheyrou put in his most accomplished season at OM, a judgement that is shared by the 44.000 netizens who voted him OM player of the year 2008-09. He is followed by Mamadou Niang (27%) and a Karim Ziani who climbed into third place (11%) while Steve Mandanda and Taye Taiwo shared 4th and 5th place (9%). A great top five.
