Brandao: Olympian gladiator

For those that still have doubts, Brandao proved on Wednesday that he truly is ‘indispensable’ to Deschamps’ Marseille. After his brace against the TFC on Wednesday in the League Cup, the Brazilian should be making his return to league action on Sunday at the Vélodrome...

The fingers pointing towards the sky, the image of Brandao celebrating his goals has become a familiar sight for OM’s supporters. Often considered ‘an unskilful player’ by the media, Brandao has never let his head drop. Today, he’s reaping the rewards of his hard work and he’s even winning over the doubters. But this recent success shouldn’t surprise anyone, and certainly hasn’t shocked Didier Deschamps or José Anigo, or his teammates. “I always said he was an important striker for Marseille. In his spirit, he really plays for the team. He works hard and he’s always motivated,” said his coach.
Facing up to the press on Friday, the Brazilian still bears the scars of his cut head suffered against Toulouse in the League Cup semi-final. But that hasn’t affected his discourse which remains unchanged: the team comes first! “If we win every game 1-0 and I don’t score, I’m happy,” he said with his usual good nature.
