Didier Deschamps: "Let's hope OM keep on winning!"

On Wednesday night, after the victory over PSG in the Champions Trophy, Didier Deschamps looked back on OM's performance, the atmosphere in Radès and Souleymane Diawara's injury.

Didier, how would you analyze the match?

“It was a tight match which could have gone either way. The quality of play was good, there were some good opportunities, but no goals as the two keepers were in form. We played as we did last year, looking to lay out our game calmly and with control, even if the players were not at 100% of their physical capabilities. The absences in the attacking area of Niang and Brandao were a hindrance, but those who played tonight, in particular Samassa, put in good work with different qualities. It’s nice to have won this penalty shoot-out. What is important is that OM keep on winning!”

Were you expecting such pressing from PSG at the start of the encounter?

“They made the decision to put a great deal of intensity into the game. In the first twenty minutes, they tried to stop us playing as they knew we had great control. They slackened off afterwards and that allowed us to create chances, even if the state of the pitch wasn’t great for either side. We are still in preparation, with a good ten days still to go. The performance of both sides was quality, but it would have been better for everyone if there had been some goals”.

What did you think of the atmosphere in Radès?

“It was very nice to see that the vast majority of the crowd was behind OM, even if it was to be expected. It is something important for the players. We won at the end of the day and that was nice for everyone present, as well as those who could not come, and we know that they were many, whether they be from France or anywhere else. Marseille is a cosmopolitan city, appreciated and watched from abroad”.

Souleymane Diawara picked up an injury during the match, is it serious?

“He picked up a little muscle problem which will keep him out for a little while. These are the risks of pre-season. Between the amount of work necessary and the accumulation of matches, the medical and technical staff try and protect the players as much as possible, but these things  happen and it is not good news”.

Was it you who decided to make the youngster Guy Gnabouyou take the fifth penalty?

“He is a striker and he didn’t hesitate. We needed five penalty takers, I couldn’t take one, I never have come to that (smiles)”.
