Once again, things went close

Just like over the last four season, OM came very close to a first victory in Bordeaux since 1977...

It must be confessed, a lot of us have never seen OM win at Bordeaux. Since 1977, the Parc Lescure, now Chaban-Delmas, has been synonymous with disappointment and a great deal of frustration. For after the return from the brink of Tigana’s players on Sunday night thanks to Modeste, OM had never been so close to breaking the spell. But, once again this would not be the case. Like last year, the one before and a good few others ...
As much as the Olympians have often suffered in the Gironde, recent seasons led us to believe that we were heading for the end of the tunnel. As proof, over the course of the last seven seasons, OM have drawn six times for one defeat. This made Jose Anigo comment after the game: "33 years without a victory for Marseille in Bordeaux? The last four seasons have seen us almost victorious, but it still eludes us. Who knows? One day maybe ..." The game was marred by some refereeing mistakes ("It is such a pity that Mr. Chapron spoiled the party" according to Jean-Claude Dassier), and that we still have at least a year to wait, let’s look back on those famous Bordeaux-OM matches that show that everything is fine and one day things will finish well...

Controversy: 2009-10 (1-1)
Despite a lot of games in hand for both teams, it seemed that the two rivals for the title were to clash in January. After dominating, the Olympians unjustly fell behind when Chamakh sent Mandanda flying forcing him to score an own goal. Cheyrou equalised in the last 10 minutes and the team had many opportunities to win. Refereeing decisions, already...

Premature: 2007-08 (2-2)
A few days before Christmas, OM continued their climb up the table after the arrival of Gerets. In less than half an hour, the Olympians led 0-2 through Niang then Cheyrou! An advantage gained too early? That devil Chamakh pulled one back before half time and Jussiê equalized at the end of a match which was very tough on Marseille.

Knockout: 2005-06 (1-1)
Last day of the season. The OM of Jean Fernandez were leading 0-1 with a quarter of an hour to go, thanks to Maoulida while Ribery had missed a penalty. Qualified for a few minutes for the preliminary round of Champions League OM saw everything crumble away when Fernando Menegazzo scored an equaliser. They finished up in the Intertoto.

Prolific: 2004-05 (3-3)

Despite a disastrous end to the season, Philippe Troussier's team still had an outside chance of making Europe on the last day away to Bordeaux. Sometimes brilliant, this OM were 1-2 up despite Laslandes opening the scoring. They would however be caught and overtaken just a few minutes from the end. Luyindula's penalty in stoppage time saved their honor (3-3).
