He was often criticised by observers and even a target for the boo-boys in the crowd. When OM were struggling, he often (wrongly) bore the brunt. Yet Jérémy Morel is still one of the most utilised Olympians.
Since he arrived at OM in 2011, he has played 49 matches (including 33 in Ligue 1) in his first season and is sitting at 42 (32 in L1) this term. The goal he scored at the start of the season against Rennes at the Stade Vélodrome (3-1) 'lifted a weight' from his shoulders from all the criticism he was receiving at that time.
Happy to have shown the public what he could bring to the team, he also knew he didn't have to prove anything to the rest of the playing squad because he had, and always did have, the confidence of his coach and teammates. His statistics prove it. Without this confidence he simply wouldn't have played so much.
An integral part of the OM defence, he has played his part in the current invincible run which dates back eight matches now. His understanding with Fanni, N’Koulou and Mendes has seen OM keep seven consecutive clean sheets in Ligue 1. His statistics against his former club Lorient show his influence on the play and his importance to OM's success. With 86% successful tackles, 81% completed passes and 70% of duels won, he was immense.
These excellent figures, and it's not the first time, also underline the player's incredible mental strength through thick and thin. Jérémy Morel was in the face of all the criticism, able to focus on his performances and today, we can all see the result...
