Caen 1-2 OM: The reactions

25/08/07 - Caen 1-2 OM

The Olympiens’ reactions after OM won its first victory of season 2007-08 at the Stade Malherbe in Caen.

Pape Diouf: “A new start”
“The score looked tight but in terms of the whole match we had many more chances than they did. Tonight we saw an OM much more in keeping with what the club is all about. We needed this win because after 4 matches winless, we needed to prove we still know how to do it. It’s a new start. Now we need to confirm this result on Wednesday against Nice. I’m a rather satisfied president.”

José Anigo: “A win dedicated to Cédric”
“The players really got going tonight. We know the side is quality, we’ve seen it against Nancy. The play was strong but the result was worse than bad because we got a draw after being 2-0 up, so we lost 2 points. Tonight we did the same thing but won, and the scoreline could have been heavier. Tonight’s win gives everyone a chance to breathe, we can work a bit more calmly now – the team is establishing itself bit by bit and finding a balance. We need to confirm this result against Nice on Wednesday – we need to win again. We dedicate this win to Cédric (Carrasso). I hope he can be patient through his injury and that he makes a speedy recovery and return to the team.”

Albert Emon: “The performance we needed”
“We knew Steve was quality. I spare a thought for Cédric (Carrasso). Mandanda had a chance to shine tonight, and it was great for us and our defence. I think there was a good feeling out there tonight – we were well organised, we had discipline, scoring chances, strong play and 100% committed players. We should have killed the game off with a 3rd goal. But we played the match we needed to – and we got the result.”

Steve Mandanda: “It was a great win”
“It’s over now, I’m relieved. I got into the match slowly and it went better and better as the minutes passed. I wasn’t forced into a save at all in the first half. Then, at 0-2, Caen pushed up hard and I was in some pretty hot water. We’ve come out of it pretty well, it was a great win, and I hope there’ll be many more. Unfortunately, I haven’t spoken to Cédric on the phone yet. I’m sincerely sorry for what happened to him, I hope he recovers and returns quickly. The human side of it is really tough. As of tomorrow, we have to concentrate on Wednesday’s match – my first at the Vélodrome. But I’ll prepare as I usually do.”

Vincent Gragnic: “The win has done us good”
“We did what we needed to get the 3 points. It’s my first L1 win and it’s pure joy even though we had a scare at the end. We have to keep it going like this. My first game went well, my team-mates helped me out and talked me through it. It’s not easy coming on with 15 minutes to go but it was good for a first hit-out. It proves the manager trusts everyone.
The win does the club and its fans a lot of good. We have to keep up the good work for the next 2 games we have on this week.”

Benoît Cheyrou: “It’s a relief”
“It’s a relief because we’ve worked really hard since the beginning of this season. We were beginning to be criticised but that’s understandable as the football we were playing wasn’t great and our points tally was rather weak. With this away win, we’re under way but we have to keep it going. Hopefully we’ll have a bit more calm in our game, which has been lacking and preventing us from securing good results.”
