Old acquaintances for Cissé

Djibril Cissé will meet to former employers in the next two weeks. First up, AJ Auxerre in the league, Saturday afternoon at the Stade de l’Abbé Deschamps. And then Liverpool, in the Champions League, October 3 at Anfield Road...

Djibril Cissé is about to head back in time in the next ten days as OM take on Axerre in Ligue 1 and then Liverpool in the Champions League. It’s the chance for the striker to reacquaint himself with pitches he knows only too well, those of the Stade de l’Abbé Deschamps and Anfield Road.
“It’s always great when I go back to Auxerre. In ten days I’ll play two very emotional games, but I have to put all that to one side,” he said.
Djibril Cissé played for Auxerre from 1998 until 2004. Winner of the Coupe de France in 2003, he earned his first France cap, debuted in the Champions League, twice finished top scorer in Ligue 1 (2001 with 22 goals, and 2004 with 26), Djibril burst onto the European stage alongside the likes of Mexes and Boumsong, under the orders of Guy Roux. “I only have fond memories of my time there, but the fact that my coach has left changes things a fair bit,” he revealed.
After Auxerre, Djibril moved to Liverpool, which also had a big impact on his career. “My heart still beats for Liverpool,” he admits. Djibril Cissé was crowned champions of Europe with the Reds in 2005, on penalties in the final over AC Milan. Despite two massive injuries, Djibril played 48 Premier League matches for Liverpool, scoring 13 goals and he played in all 13 2005 Champions League matches, scoring six times.
There will obviously be lots running through his mind over the next wo weeks. But Djibril puts it all in perspective: “I play for Marseille now, final,” he concluded.
