Cana : "Fight to the bitter end"

05/05/08 - OM 1-2 Bordeaux

After the defeat at the hands of Bordeaux, OM's captain has not written off their chances of taking a third place which would qualify them for the preliminary round of the Champions League.

What is the general feeling after this defeat?
We are disappointed, which is normal as we’ve just lost a very important game in view of a qualification for the Champions League. There are six points left to be taken and we are two points behind Nancy. We will have to fight right to the death. We have to win the next two games and hope that Nancy lose one of theirs. Anything is possible …

In the second half, OM were not able to hold onto their lead …
I think it’s more down to the quality of Bordeaux. We couldn’t handle it. In the second half they were head and shoulders above us and that showed in the final score.

After Lille, it’s Bordeaux who have managed to win at the Vélodrome. Can you explain it?
We’ve lost 3 of the last 4 games at home, that’s a lot. Thankfully we are winning games away from home. We going to give our all for the remaining games. You can’t always explain things in football... We put in a good first half. We didn’t create a lot of chances but we managed to score. In the second half we couldn’t deal with the game, we couldn’t get organised and put up a solid block as a team. We were disorganised and were made to pay for it by a team that play very well together.

If you want to take third place, Nancy will have to slip up…
Nancy must lose one of their remaining games and they have to go to Lyon who need a win as well. Afterwards it’s up to us to do the necessary and win our remaining games. If they don’t slip up then they will have more than deserved their third place. There are two games to go and we will see how things turn out once the season is over.
