10 key numbers from the season

How many spectators made it to the Vélodrome this season? Who had the most playing time in the team? How many goals were scored by Mamadou Niang and Djibril Cissé ? Here are the answers to those questions, in the 10 key numbers from the season

Or the total number of goals scored by the attacking partnership of Mamadou Niang/Djibril Cissé in the League. The Senegalese international has finished 2nd in the League goalscoring charts with 18 goals including two doubles against Lyon (behind Benzema : 20 goals), Djibril Cissé came in 3rd with 16 goals (level with Gomis). The two Marseille players have scored more than half of OM’s 58 goal haul this season. The third best attack in the country!

Or the number of minutes Laurent Bonnart spent on the pitches of L1 this season. The highest playing time in the OM squad for the former Le Mans player who arrived initially to start from the bench. Quite a total! He is closely followed by Steve Mandanda (3060 minutes) and Lorik Cana (3036 minutes).

The number of games played by OM this season in all competitions (L1, Champions League, Coupe de la Ligue, Coupe de France, UEFA Cup). Last season, Albert Emon’s side disputed 52 encounters.

Or the final League placing for Marseille. With 62 points, OM finished two points ahead of Nancy. A finishing spot that is synonymous with a place in the preliminary round of the Champions League, a repeat of the performance of the 2002-03 season. A few months later, OM had managed to reach the competition proper by overcoming Austria Vienna.

Or the number of yellow cards received by Lorik Cana in the League this season. OM’s captain was cautioned more than any of his teammates. He is followed by his midfield counterpart Benoît Cheyrou (8 cards) and by Julien Rodriguez (5). In the fair-play standing of the League, OM finished in 4th place.

The number of supporters that came to the Vélodrome this season for League games. It is (by far) the best total in the League (Lyon, came in second spot with 708.652). If you add to that total the crowds from National and European cup games, you would go well over the million mark!
The average number of spectators for a League game at the Vélodrome is 52.600 and the highest attendance for a game this season came in the match between OM and Lyon (56.271). For once this is not the record for the League, the match Lille-Lyon which was played at the Stade de France came in with a higher total (77.840).

The number of decisive passes played in by Samir Nasri this season in the League. The top score for the season alongside Jérôme Leroy of Rennes (who was placed number one in the standings as none of his passes were made directly from set pieces). It is worth noting that Nasri played in 7 of his 10 passes to Mamadou Niang.

Or the first victory for a French team at Anfield Road at the ground of Liverpool FC in the Champions League in October. The work of OM and Mathieu Valbuena with his magical finish. A historical success for Eric Gerets’s first match in charge of OM.

Or the number of victories in a row at the Vélodrome this season between the 22nd of December 2007 (OM 1-0 Le Mans) and the 9th of March 2008 (OM 2-0 Saint-Etienne). This incredible run in all competitions was put to an end on the 22nd of March by Sochaux (a 0-1 defeat).

Or OM’s League standing on the night of game 13 after a draw (0-0) against Lorient at the Vélodrome at the start of November. This just shows a bit more the incredible march up the table undertaken by Eric Gerets’s men, a march which would take them to 3rd place 25 games later. 51 points were taken from a possible 75 in this period!
