BORDEAUX 1-1 OM :TEST SUCCESS

OM managed to get through the game at Bordeaux, taking the lead thanks to Koné, then holding Bordeaux back after their equaliser. They can even harbour some regrets as they had the opportunities to win the game.

BORDEAUX 1-1 OM
0-1 Koné (3rd)
1-1 Chamakh (25th)

Once again OM came very close to putting an end to the « curse » of Lescure. They had a lot of chances to do it. Four « one on ones  » against Ramé for Niang and Koné (3), is not nothing. The opportunity was only seized on one ocasion. It’s a shame, as the Marseille performance made their ambitions of a victory legitimate. Things started off very well with a goal in the 3rd minute. Cheyrou played a perfect ball to Niang, who passed the ball to Koné waiting in the middle, finishing off a move straight out of the training ground (0-1).

The play

There were no surprises in the starting line-up. Cana, who came back to Marseille on Thursday after two matches with his national team, was rested.
Erik Gerets bolstered up his midfield, with three defensive players M'Bami, Kaboré and Cheyrou, with the last aiding Ziani animate the match.

Just like last year Erik Gerets’s men took the initiative. Would they be able to hold onto it? No, as Bordeaux equalised in the 25th minute, after a fantastic move carried out by Gouffran and Chamakh, with the latter firing past Mandanda from close range (1-1).
OM did not have to hang on to bring back a lucky point, on the contrary the produced some great play and finished off a satisying first half strongly.
Afte Bordeaux started the second half well, OM finished the game of well, mixing defensive control in order to avoid the worst, solidarity (as shown by Taiwo’s tackle at the feet of Chamakh, who was ideally placed), and attacking movement. An ultimate attempt from Koné, flew wide of Ramé’s goal. There was nothing to be done , even though Gerets had brought on all his attacking options, Ben Arfa, Samassa and Valbuena.
There will be no joy at the « end of a series ». Looking beyond the statistics, Erik Gerets said this to OMtv: « It would be good to be happy. Yes, we’ve taken a point from the game but it’s not good enough. If you want to be champion you have to win games like that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not angry, I’m a little disappointed ». Disappointed by the result after the performance put in by his men.
There are still reasons to be satisfied, as this was a good result away from home against a rival. After an almost perfect month of August, OM have once agaion proven that they have strong credentials for the season.
