Winners in the first leg, OM have won their ticket for the group stage of the Champions League by beating Bergen after a one way game. A qualification that now, more than ever, was dedicated to the supporters.
1-1 Sigursson (74th)
2-1 Niang (90th)
This time it’s done. OM are ther. Marseille have made their way to the Champions League, making good the efforts they put in last season.
OM showed their superiority throughout the game only having to shut up shop in the last 15 minutes after Sigursson equalised on the night with a header.
Getting back into the match out of nowhere, the Norwegians gave everything they had but Mandanda was never really put in any serious danger.
If they had gotten anything it would have been an injustice to an OM side that dominated the physical Vikings throughout the contest.
It was simple, for anyone who did not know the score from the first leg, you would have thought it was Marseille who were under obligation to score a goal, not their prudent visitors. The match was really played in one direction, straight towards the goals guarded by Opdal. Apart from one save by Mandanda from Solli, Brann Bergen spent their time trying to resist OM. Their destiny was on a tightrope, but they kept their balance for a long time.
Taiwo fired off numerous efforts. Ben Arfa mystified just bout anybody who crossed his path. Shots from Ziani and Grandin grazed the uprights, but OM still had no goal to show for their efforts. Nor did they bury the hopes of Mons Mjelde’s men.
At the end of the day , the goal came from an action that seemed destined to go nowhere. Taye Taiwo played a long pass to Mamadou Niang.
But two defenders were blocking his path. But that was without counting on the malice of the Senegalese international. He gambled everything on their hesitation, and he was right to do so. He broke through the slight gap they left him and was first to the ball, got past the keeper and fired the ball into the empty net, opening the scoring (1-0, 66th).
On his knees with his finger pointing to the heavens, he dedicated the goal to the memory of Imad and Lahcen. Another homage on this special day that saw the stadium mark it’s mourning by wearing black. The stands themselves were deadly silent until the opening whistle.
The equaliser scored by the Norwegians caused a little worry, but not too much. Especially as in stoppage time, Mamadou Niang popped up and scored a second goal (2-1). A goal which saw the stars of the Champions League and the supporters gone too young to the heavens burn even brighter …
