OM will play in the Champions League and Sedan will go down to L2 next whatever the result of the match between them at the Vélodrome this weekend. The match will be pressure-free as it will have no bearing on league standings. Only the football and the quality of game will matter. “Both teams will enjoy themselves enormously tonight. But the true pleasure lies in winning,” said Albert Emon.
Happy to have finished the season with a wet sail, the Marseillais want to cap it off well before going on national team duty or holidays. “It’s a real relief to finish the season with no pressure, we didn’t expect it to be this way,” continues the OM manager. “We have to finish the season well, it’s important for the fans and for us too.”
So there is no question of fielding a B-team; Albert Emon will field a side much like he has in the last few matches. OM have strung together league 5 wins in a row and are undefeated at the Vélodrome since March 4, when they went down 0-1 to Lens.
Scorer of the winning goal last week in the Forez, Mathieu Valbuena is making the most of the end of the season: “It’s great to have won against St-Etienne and to be assured of Champions League football. We’ll be able to cap the season off in style and give something back to our fans, who deserve it..
The Sedanais, faced with OM, will want to leave the top flight with heads held high. “Sedan will be under no pressure, they will be at 100%,” affirms Albert Emon. “They are an impressively attacking side. They have scored a lot of goals, even though they conceded a lot. They don’t deserve to go down,” adds Habib Beye. “They played good football throughout the season, and you have to respect them, but we have the weapons to put them in real difficulty.”
In a Stade Vélodrome in party mode, with the birthday celebrations of 2 supporter groups (the Yankees, 20 yo, and the Dodger’s, 15 yo), the OM players will rise to the occasion. “If we can give them one last win, it would be a beautiful birthday present,” concludes Mathieu Valbuena.
