An attacking midfielder, the Dutchman made his name with the national team but also through playing for some of the world’s biggest clubs, such as Barça, Chelsea and Liverpool. He has the aura and the experience that will even further bolster OM in 2007-08 after the transfers already concluded in recent weeks. And to cap it all off, his wife is French so he speaks our language beautifully.

Boudewijn Zenden: “OM is a dream club”

Only minutes after signing a 2-year contract, the new OM recruit gave us his first interview.

How did you decide on OM?
OM is a huge club that is in the running for titles and trophies every year. I’m very ambitious. And also, I should say that I spoke with Djibril (Cissé). He was very positive about the club and the fans.
I’m familiar with the stadium, having played here in the World Cup for Holland in 1998.
The directors, Djibril and all the people around the club made a big effort to get me to sign for OM. That was great, when a club makes such an effort, it increases your desire to go there and play.

With what ambitions do you come to OM?
With a lot of ambition. Especially when I look at the players that have been signed in the past few weeks, and when I think about how the team played last year to finish 2nd.
I also think OM is a dream club. And my dream is to win the Ligue 1 championship with Olympique de Marseille. It’ll be tough. Lyon has dominated in recent years. But another team will have its turn, and I hope that team is OM.

You speak French very well already, thanks to your wife. Do you find France interesting as a country?
Yes. It’s a dynamic league, very attacking, very tough, but also interesting. I’ve played several times for Holland against France and I always found the players to be really good and physically very strong.

A final word for the OM fans…
I’m very happy to be here and I hope the OM fans have the same dreams that I do, that they dream of winning trophies and celebrating them together.
