CARQUEFOU-OM : AVOID THE TRAP

18/03/08 - Carquefou-OM

OM are without doubt favourites going into this game against a Carquefou team in 13th position in their CFA2 group. The trip of Goliath to the David of the competition will not, however, be easy.

It’s what the Coupe de France is all about. David against Goliath. The small team is already famous as they knocked out Nancy in the last round. There is a gap of four divisions between the two protagonists. But Carquefou have already suffered the consequences of their success. The club from the suburbs of Nantes will not be playing at their own ground as the game has been moved to FC Nantes stadium the Beaujoire. 38 000 spectators are expected to fill a ground that hasn’t seen many big games or elite teams this season.
But let’s concentrate of the sporting side of the game. OM, fourth in the First Division, are looking to win the Coupe de France, after to consecutive defeats in the final. Carquefou are fighting for survival in CFA 2 (they are 13th in their group at the moment). Denis Renaud’s men have put on a cup run a bit like that of Montceau-les-Mines last year, a CFA club having a difficult season in the league but on fire in the cup. The club from Burgundy managed to get to the semi-final where they were beaten by the future winners FC Sochaux-Montbéliard (0-2 aet).
OM’s coach, Eric Gerets wants to hear nothing about a possible elimination  : «We’re looking to put out 11 guys who are in form and ready to close Carquefou down all over the pitch as we cannot allow them to get into the game. We can’t take this game to lightly. There can be no excuses, it’s a match that we must win. We would have liked to win the two cups (with the UEFA Cup). But as we are eliminated from one we have to concentrate on the other.»
Steve Mandanda is wary : «We have to respect our opponents. We know it’s going to be a difficult game, as they will give everything they have as they want to go through as well. We know what they did to Nancy and it’s up to us to make sure that we don’t have a bad surprise in this game.»
