Eric Gerets : «We’re going to try and do anything we can to take all six points»

05/05/08 - OM 1-2 Bordeaux

"Sad" about his sides defeat, on Monday Eric Gerets judged that there was "nothing else to say" about Bordeaux's victory as OM "played too badly in the seond half". The trip to Le Mans is now of the utmost importance. "We’re going to try and do anything we can to take all six points".

What is your feeling the day after the defeat?
We’re sad to see that at the moment we are unable to make the difference at the Vélodrome. We’ve had a lot of trouble at home recently. Especially against Lille (defeat, 1-3), and yesterday in the second half against Bordeaux.

Are the same symptoms there from one game to the other?
You can’t compare the two games. Against Lille it was a physical battle. Lille were physically stronger than us in the middle of the park. Yesterday, in the 2nd half, it was more a tactical problem, becuase of the intelligence of the Bordeaux side.
But these two games also show that we are missing something in order to finish games well. When you are leading with only 10 minutes to go it’s stupid to concede two goals, no matter how great they were. It’s sad to lose, when we could have envisaged a whole other scenario. However, looking at how the game went, you have to be honest and admit that Bordeaux deserve their win.

Do you think that the result is down to a better Bordeaux in the second half or a poorer OM?
That’s also one of the strengths of the opponent. Bordeaux managed to always have a player free in the midfield. Their two forwards played very intelligently, blocking our full backs. Because of this we were scared of pushing out too far. It’s a shame that we weren’t able to make the movements that I explained to the team at half time. The 4-4-2 is the best system but it’s also the most difficult to play.

A victory is imperative against Le Mans

You often speak of mentality. Is that what was missing on Sunday?
Yesterday, the quality of our play in the second half was not good at all. That has npothing to do with the team spirit. We messed up short passes and sent long balls directly into the stands. I’m sorry, but for a team like OM, the second half was just not acceptable.
Even in the first half, despite the fact that we opened the scoring, you still felt the our opponents had more quality in the middle and in their reading of the game.
Except, everytime we kept the ball on the ground playing in our forwards we felt we could be dangerous as well. That’s why it’s a shame that we lost the balance and the cohesion between certain players.

We felt a certain amount of nervousness during Bordeaux’s last attack, which was concluded by Ducasse’s goal…
When you concede a goal it’s often the case that an error had been commited somewhere. However, it was a fantastic goal. He’ll be waiting a while before he scores another beauty like that…

At moments it felt like your team were scared. What was it in your opinion?
They were not scared about playing football, but of taking initiatives. In the second half trhere were a lot of missed passes that should have been simple. It’s strange as we had 60.000 supporters behind us. But, what do you want … If the team is not playing well and you’re up against a team that is not in second place for nothing, you can only take a lesson from it and tell yourself that it wil not happen next season.

Is the teams morale low, now at the finish ?
Of course it is low today. As we were given a lesson in the second half by an opponent that was superior to us. But on the other hand, there are still two games to be played. They look difficult for Nancy and for us. We’re going to try and do anything we can to take all six points. If we didn’t play for this objective it would be a scandal.

Would a defeat to Le Mans on Saturday be the end of your hopes?
Yes, totally. If Nancy lose away to Lyon, for sure they will not lose their last game at home.
