It will be difficult, but...

05/05/08 - Le Mans-OM

With two games left to go, OM have to make the two point gap that separates them from Nancy. They have to win all their games now and hope that Nancy slip up. The task would appear to be difficult...but there are numerous reasons to continue hoping.

It will be difficult, but…
Lyon must (without a doubt) beat Nancy
A positive consequence (at least there is one) of Bordeaux’s victory, it puts Lyon under obligation to win next Saturday against Nancy, to at least keep their two point lead over Bordeaux, with one game left afterwards.
Nancy’s task will be very complicated at Gerland, in a stadium where they remain on a run of six defeats in a row  ! The last time Nancy beat Lyon away was during the 1990-91 season…

It will be difficult, but … OM are more at ease away from home at the moment
After a third of the season particularlry positive at the Vélodrome, and a series of 8 consecutive wins at home ( !), OM have had a rough time of it since the visit of Sochaux (0-1). Three gmaes lost for one won, have had a bleak time at home.
Points lost that they have always managed « to get back » away from home, with three consecutive wins in trips to Lorient, Metz and Monaco, and an invincibility away from Marseille that is running since the 13th of January in the League  !
One week after their defeat to Bordeaux, Eric Gerets’s players will once again have to pass their « make up exam » by getting a win on Saturday away to Le Mans. « We’ll have to play like we did against Monaco by being well positioned and counter attacking and that should pay off  », judges Charles Kaboré.

It will be difficult, but… the run in would seem to be favourable
For the last game of the season, OM will play at home to Strasbourg (currently in 19th 4 points behind 18th). Will they have both feet in the Second Division then ? Even if it is obvious that no matter what the situation, Strasbourg will play the game and not roll over at the Vélodrome, it’s just as obvious that Nancy will be up against a much tougher cookie. They will be playing against Rennes and Guy Lacombe (7th). The advantage would appear to be with OM, assuming that they have their destiny in their own hands at that point.
« Nancy have to go to Lyon, before playing at home against Rennes in the last game of the season. That’s why I am confident. As far as we are concerned we will do our utmost to win our remaining games so that we can have no regrets on the 17th of May  », insists Laurent Bonnart.

It will be difficult, but… OM have put in too much effort to give up now
19th after 13 games, OM have accomplished a small miracle by getting back into the running for a Champions League spot. « We can’t let go  », says Laurent Bonnart. « We’re at the end of the season which means we have put in a lot of efforts physically and mentally to get where we are. We have a couple of days to rest. Images from the Bordeaux game will be going through our heads, but when we get back to the training ground , we will be full of enthousiasm and desire to beat Le Mans. To do that we will have to be concentrated and at 110% ».
The mentality, a very subjective key, but one that is without doubt not the least important for a reaction and by extension the achievment of an objective. « We managed to do it against Monaco and in the big games that have become references for us. We have already been very strong collectively and mentally  », reminds Mathieu Valbuena. The best conclusion to this myriad of reasons to continue believing  ».
