Le Mans 0-0 OM : Reactions from the Marseille camp

11/05/08 - Le Mans 0-0 OM

Reactions from Eric Gerets, José Anigo, Benoît Cheyrou, Mathieu Valbuena and Guy Gnabouyou after the draw against Le Mans.

Eric Gerets : "Pleased with the efforts shown "
"We were stronger than them in the middle of the park. Romaric was really scared of Samir (Nasri) as Nasri ran as much as two players tonight. Benoît (Cheyrou) played well, and we were in control of the game. The two teams defended then attacked, it’s just a shame we missed some clearcut chances. I’m pleased with the efforts of my players as that hadn’t always been the case recently, especially at home. Le Mans played the game and wanted to win the match as well. It’s thanks to that, that the game was so open and a pleasure to watch. Mathieu (Valbuena) was lucky not to be injured in the tackle that led to the red card ".

José Anigo : "The players have nothing to blame themselves for "
"The team spirit was good, we’re coming away with a point but that wasn’t our goal. We had to take all three points, and we had the chance of doing it. In the first half with Akalé then in the second through Cheyrou. We controled the game, we were very strong in our tackles and we were playing against a team that thought they were in the World Cup. We don’t have control over our destiny, there is one game to go and it will be up to Rennes to go and win or draw with Nancy. We’ll take tonights point and see what will happen next week. Anything is possible in football. Nobody has ever won a game before it was played … Rennes have a lot of potential and are capable of going and getting a result against Nancy and even a draw would be perfect for us. Nancy will also be playing for their future, so it promises to be a great game. We have to beat Strasbourg and then see how the other results go. We can’t do anything else as we could have won it tonight. We had the chances to do it but the players have nothing to blame themselves for as the team spirit was great and so was the quality of their play.
Defensively we were very good as well. Zubar played his best match this year. The two fullbacks played well as well … It wasn’t easy but the players have nothing to blame themselves for. We’re chasing the points we dropped at the start of the season and those dropped at home during the last four games. We had to take the points beforehand now we just have to wait and see what happens. We’re not happy but we’ll do our best to beat Strasbourg…"

Mathieu Valbuena : "We came up against a great keeper "
"I took a lot of knocks. We played well but we just missed the goal that would have made the difference. It’s frustrating as we had the chances winning the game. When you don’t win, when you are out of luck, you have to be satisfied with the draw. We came up against a great keeper. We tried to build things up, we carved out some chances but their keeper was just too good. We have to concentrate on the final game, but we don’t have our destiny in our hands. I think that Rennes will be going to Nancy looking for a European spot. It’s up to us to beat Strasbourg and wait for Nancy’s result. We’ll go into the game against Strasbourg with the same team spirit. We’ll be playing it like a Champions League game and tell ourselves that there is a European Cup to be platyed in if we succeed. If luck is on our side, Rennes could go and get a draw away to Nancy".

Benoît Cheyrou : "I’m upset with myself "
" I’m upset with myself concerning my chance as we’d played a great one-two with Mamadou (Niang), I came up against their keeper, but made the wrong choice. I thought a side footed effort to the side would do it. The team spirit was great, we had a few good chances and I think it is positive for the future, hoping that things go well for us next weekend, against Strasbourg and for Rennes against Nancy. With a mentality like the one we showed tonight, we can go far and that is encouraging ".

Guy Gnabouyou : "It made a great impression on me"
"I think I dealt with this first game well, the other players made me very welcome and everything went well. It made a great impression on me, I saw that I still have a lot of work to do. The coach asked me to play deep, to provoke, to cross the ball and to link up with Niang as much as possible. It was a tough game with a lot of duels. It was a good match ".
