The OM defender is delighted with the win against Auxerre, but Laurent Bonnart is already thinking about the home game to Le Havre, on Saturday, in front of a public who were left with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Nancy before the holidays.
What is your analysis of the match against Auxerre?
In the first half our tactics were good. We were rarely under pressure and tried to be dangerous but Auxerre defended well. It wasn’t easy, but from a very good cross by Bolo Zenden, Mamadou Samassa fired in a great header. We had one clear cut chance and we put it away. Sometimes having five chances is of no use if you don’t put them away.
In the second half, Steve Mandanda was in great form. He pulled off two or three outstanding saves, but from set pieces you never know what can happen. Then we put away a second goal which finished off the match. We were very realistic. It’s what we were lacking before the break.
After Besançon, Auxerre and another frozen pitch, the start of 2009 has been pretty good for you. How was the pitch on Saturday against Auxerre?
It was much better than the one at Besançon even if the conditions were not easy. At Besançon, it was an ice-rink. At the Abbé-Deschamps stadium, 75% of the pitch was frozen and there were some very dangerous areas around the two boxes. But, there were certain parts of the field where you could play with moulded studs. But you know, it was the same for both teams.
After the defeat to Nancy at the Vélodrome, were you under pressure to get a result?
We weren’t really under pressure as such. We couldn’t forget about what happened against Nancy and keep it in mind for the second half of the season as far as our attitude and frame of mind are concerned. We tried to correct certain details against Besançon and on Saturday against Auxerre. We have a number of players absent, which complicates things, but if everyone works together and shows the same desire on, the pitch, we can get good results. We didn’t let go at all, and there is enough quality in the squad to make the difference. I’m happy for Mamadou Samassa and Mathieu Valbuena. They really needed to score at the moment. It’s proof that we have to keep on working.
By winning in Auxerre, Marseille remain unbeaten in the league away from home for a year now…
It’s important to be able to count on our run, even if it isn’t our principal source of motivation it can become one. In terms of concentration, rigour and team spirit, we have to be able to do i tat home as well. At home we desperately what to do things well, that at the end f the day we mess things up making mistakes that we pay for dearly, as our opponents are well organised and they know that we will attack and they can hit us on the break. Sometimes we have to know how to play as a solid block and be both realistic and efficient.
In Marseille, the public are right behind us, it’s the same on the road as well. We have to use that support but we try and do too much where we should stay focused in our own zones. The public helps us to put a bit of fire into matches and to win them.
How does this week of preparation before the match against Le Havre look?
Firstly, there will be no snow! We’re going to rest as we got back late in the night after the match against Auxerre. We will recuperate on Monday and prepare for the game against Le Havre. There are things that we have to make better as we know what we have to do at home. We have a lot to be forgiven for at home.
