Without their captain, OM will have tio beat Rennes and hope that Bordeaux lose against Caen, in order to win the title.
This victory over Nancy allows OM to stay on course for the title and guarantees a place in the Champions League …
It’s very important for us, in the clubs progression over the last few years, to be able to play regularly in the Champions League. When you look at the season we have put in, there wil be a lot of regrets as the club has not been Champion for so long that we really want to offer that to Marseille. We’re going to try right to the end. We haven’t managed it yet and it will be very difficult.
Last year you spoke out before the final match. Will you do the same this year for the title?
It’s spontaneous. I love this club so much that I want to reach the heights with it and to make them champions. We have to fight to the end. We will have to fight for the title each year now that the club has stepped up a level.
You still have to beat Rennes next Saturday …
It’s not going to be easy against a side in the running for a European spot. We just have go out and play, we have to win as we have a job to finish off. As a professional and a competitor, we have to reach the next level and hope that Caen help us out as they have a very good side. They absolutely have to win. We have our fingers crossed and are 100% behind them. But that will mean nothing if we don’t win our match.
How are you preparing for this final match of the season?
There will be a lot of emotion after the match. We are all very close to the coach. Since his arrival, on a personal level, everything has gone fantastically well. Unfortunately, I’ve played my last match of the season, but I will be present right to the end. The coach wants to finish on a positive note and become champion. We won’t let our feelings get the better of us. We’ll focus on the game in hand and see what happens afterwards.
What impression do you have of the team’s performance over the course of the season?
We have had a lot of injuries, suspensions, absences this year. The squad managed to retain the same level of play throughout the year. If we had to choose, we would have all preferred to be out on the pitch, but we have the squad capable of stepping in to fill in the gaps. We’ve always managed to get good results. None of our players are in the top 10 goalscorers in the L1, even though we have the best attack. It’s quite unbelievable. I’d never seen that before, as teams at the top generally have one or two players who stand out and make the difference. Each player who has scored has brought his contribution to our achievement. It proves that the squad is homogeneous.
