Olympians in South Africa

All the Olympians have gone through their second group stage match of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. What are their chances of continuing the adventure?

Group A
Worn down by the successive controversies (cost of the hotel, insults aimed by Anelka at Raymond Domenech, the exclusion of Anelka, boycott of a training session by the players …) which have touched the squad, “les Bleus” appeared under the weather in their first two matches in South Africa.
Steve Mandanda has not played at all while Mathieu Valbuena managed 22 minutes against Mexico, who were already 1-0 up when the OM player came on.
If they want to qualify for the last sixteen, Raymond Domenech’s men have to win against South Africa and hope that there is a winner in the game between Mexico and Uruguay. If this did happen, “les Bleus” will have to score a lot of goals as second place would be decided on goal difference. This is a domain in which France, who have not scored a goal in the tournament, do not excel …

Group B
A perfect run so far for Argentina and Gabriel Heinze. The OM defender even scored the first goal of the competition for the Albiceleste, offering them the win against Nigeria. If Gabriel Heinze played both of his countries matches in full, this is not the case for Taye Taiwo. The Super Eagles defender, played 73 minutes against Argentina and 54 minutes against Greece, Nigeria lost both matches.
If Nigeria beat South Korea and Argentina defeat Greece, Taye Taiwo and his compatriots will advance to the second round.

Group D
After two group stage matches, Ghana find themselves in first place after a win over Serbia and a draw against Australia. The OM forward loaned out to Arles-Avignon this season, André Ayew played both matches in full for the Black Stars. But, Ghana could lose everything in the final match against Germany. Effectively, if a draw would see the “Mannschaft” through, a defeat conjugated with a victory of Serbia would send the Black Stars home.

Group E
Cameroon will remain in the history books as the first team officially eliminated from the 2010 World Cup. After two defeats to Japan and Denmark, Paul Le Guen’s team have nothing left to hope for against Holland. The Olympian Stéphane Mbia played both matches at right back. Against Japan he almost scored with a powerful effort from more than 30 metres, but the crossbar saved the Japanese keeper.

Group G
In the group of death, the Ivory Coast, who suffered a tough blow with Didier Drogba’s fractured arm, assured the essential by drawing against Portugal. But, faced with Brazil, and despite the return of the Chelsea striker, the Elephants could do nothing against the realism of Kaka and his team-mates. The Ivory Coast goalkeepers are coached by Laurent Spinosi who has proven his worth at Olympique de Marseille. If his protégé, Boubacar Barry, did not concede against Portugal, he was obliged to pick the ball out of his net on three occasions against the five times World champions.
