Eric Gerets : "It is through tactical discipline that we will win"

15/05/08 - OM-Strasbourg

The OM coach is delighted to be involved in a final day of the season that promises to be exciting and undecided. "But we are dependant on the result of another team" regrets Eric Gerets.

How is your group doing at the moment?
Today I tried to concentrate more on the atmosphere rather than the tactics so that they will be on form on Saturday.

What will you be saying to them before this match?
There is not a lot to say. We have to give everything for the last game but still respect the tactical orders. If we win the game, we will have done our job with the hope that Rennes help us a little. The tactical orders will be a bit more strict as at 10 against 11 at Le Mans, not everyone did what had been decided. We might have had a few more chances and why not, the goal that would have put us into third place.

Have you had to shout to get your message over?
I often do it but not necessarily by raising my voice. Two days after a game, the players know what went wrong. The important thing is to make sure that mistakes that were made are not reproduced. Next season, I do not want to drop points because of a lack of tactical discipline. We can come up against a better team than us but to lose points as we have not done our job properly is unacceptable. There are some players that are so attracted by the ball that they forget their tasks. I’ll be keeping a close eye on things during the last training session and during the first 20 or 25 minutes of the game. It is through tactical discipline that we will win.

Is it frustrating to not have your destiny in your own hands?
Obviously we’d like to be in control but that just isn’t the case. It’s frustrating, we’re disappointed but the reality is that we are depending on the result of another team. I’ll follow their result up to half time but not further.

"The city deserves the Champions League, we’ll see if we deserve it as well "

Is there a certain amount of excitement surrounding this final match with the League being so tight?
The League needed a bit more suspense as these last few years, especially at the top of the table, Lyon won with a lot of advance over everybody. That’s not the case this year and next season will probably be the same. The League is becoming more interesting for everyone.

"25% chance of finishing in 3rd place "
One chance in four… That’s the probability estimated by Eric Gerets for OM to reach third place before going into this final game. «If Nancy win, they will stay ahead of us. On paper, they have more chance than us to qualify. We have to win our match and hope…».

This match against Strasbourg is the last in front of your supporters. The last chance of making them happy with a good performance …
(Cutting in) A win before anything else … I’m a coach who wants to win with style but for this game, what counts is the victory. If we can put on a show,if the players still have the legs and the fuel for it, we’ll do what we can but the victory is primordial. The city deserves the Champions League, we’ll see if we deserve it as well.

How do you see the game going against Strasbourg?
I don’t know how they will play. I don’t know if they will be defensive or attacking. It would be good for the 60.000 spectators if the two teams try and play an open game to try and win. But i can’t exactly ring up my colleague and tell him to play with three forwards (laughs).
