OM 2-1 ASSE

1-0 : Cissé (8’)
1-1 : Heinz (45’+1)
2-1 : Pagis ( 64’)

A beautiful game of football. That’s how this OM-ASSE game, the last chapter of the first half of the season, will be remembered. A shimmering spectacle was put on by all concerned, but above all an OM victory thanks to the talents of one man: Mickaël Pagis. The OM forward, with a specialty move, brought home the victory for Marseille (64’) by way of response to ASSE’s equaliser from Heinz (45’+1) and following on from Djibril Cissé, who opened the scoring in the 8th minute. Thanks to this win, OM is now within two points of second-placed Lens, before the rest of the matches of round 19 are played this Saturday.

Thanks to this win, OM is now within two points of second-placed Lens, before the rest of the matches of round 19 are played this Saturday.

As we said before, this rivalry, charged with history and emotion, lived up to its prestigious billing. From both sides the shots rained down and chances (almost 20!) flowed, and happily, the scales tipped in favour of OM. Nasri began the shootout in the 2nd minute when his shot was blocked by Jérémie Janot, who made his mark on the game with a fantastic display between the ASSE sticks. The Greens’ leaping keeper closed Cana down spectacularly and saved the Albanian’s goal-bound shot (9’). From the ensuing corner, Nasri’s effort found the head of Zubar at the near post, deviating to Cissé. The new OM striker didn’t miss his chance to score his first OM goal with the flat of his foot and cool the boots of the effervescent Janot (10’, 1-0).

After this thundering beginning, OM slowed down at the half-hour mark, and despite Pagis’s header (33’), it was Saint-Etienne that was marshalling its forces well. From Sablé’s 32nd minute shot to the defensive mix-up by Zubar and Carrasso that Piquionne failed to put away (35’), showed that they are fierce competitors and a force to be reckoned with. And it paid dividends at the end of the first half, when Czech international Heinz equalised. Feindouno’s shot was turned away by Carrasso into the path of Piquionne, who shot directly at the Ohm keeper, who parried it into the path of Dernis who put Heinz through to finish with a powerful shot (45’+1, 1-1).
After recovering at the break, both teams started the second half like they did the first. And what a battle! Niang’s grubbing shot just missed the frame (48’) before Landrin tried a lob from the middle of the park that Carrasso was happy to see go wide (50’). Piquionne menaced again with a beautiful free kick (52’) to which OM responded with three consecutive corners. On the second, Niang was once again denied by Janot (53’). Without blinking, Pagis made contact with the ball with the tip of his toes and in an improbable turning move, put Taiwo’s centre into the back of the net (64’, 2-1). After Monaco, Niang’s centres for Pagis have become very impressive. With his head, Piquionne kept the suspense in the game (74’) but OM won the day and could savour the fruits of their victory at the final whistle. Bring on 2007!
