Mandanda, a great 2015-16 season!31 may 2016
His talent reverberated throughout League 1 Steve Mandanda has certainly had his best season since he came to Marseille 9 years ago. Without him, the Olympians' could have had an even trickier time in the championship. Who could forget his exceptional performance against Lorient, which allowed the OM's match against Brittany to end in a draw. That day, "El Fenomeno" had 9 saves, a career best, and also the highest number for any goalkeeper in the League 1 this season. The videos below perfectly illustrate Mandanda's influence on the team.
"I'd like to thank my teammates for giving me a chance to be seen," the Olympians' captain remarked ironically when accepting the UNFP trophy for League 1's best goalkeeper of 2015-16, which he earned this season for the 4th time in his career. That's tough, but fair according to the statistics.
In the 36 matches he played, Steve Mandanda faced 134 shots, that's 3.7 per match. Although he allowed 40 goals during the championship, the Olympian's goalkeeper saved 95 (2.6 per match), 61 in the box and 34 from outside. His saves percentage is 70.4%, with a clean sheet in 9 League 1 matches.
Impressive numbers, but there are better ones. When saving goals in the air, "El Fenomeno" was flawless! Of his 55 aerial save attempts, 95% were successful. Mandanda missed only 3 attempts, twice missing the ball and once dropping it. Of his 52 successful saves, over 443 matches with OM across all competitions, he threw out 13 and captured 39. Without a doubt, this season, Mandanda was the best!
