Louis Nicollin, founder and president of Montpellier HSC, passed away on the day of his 74th birthday.

A passionate lover of sport and for many years a leading figure in French football, "Loulou" had a special place in his heart for OM. In April 1981, his Montpellier-La-Paillade team, already assured of promotion to the old French Division 1, were expecting to come away from their league match at Stade Vélodrome with a win. Soundly beaten 3-1 by OM's famous "Minots" ("kids"), who put on a supercharged display, young president Louis Nicollin, exhilarated by the atmosphere, gifted his portion of the gate receipts to the then crisis-stricken OM. The financial haemorrhaging was stemmed. The march onwards and upwards could continue afresh.

Olympique Marseille wishes to express its deepest condolences to the family of Louis Nicollin and to the club and all its supporters.
