Olympique de Marseille began the 2018-19 Ligue 1 season in stunning fashion on Friday night as they dispatched Toulouse 4-0 at the Orange Velodrome.

With many players still missing after the World Cup, it had the look of a makeshift team to start the season in front of a full house.

But OM settled quickly into a good rhythm to counter a somewhat difficult Toulouse side in the early stages.

And the breakthrough came just before the break in historic fashion. The first use of the VAR in Ligue 1 benefited OM after a handball from Amian ensured Dimitri Payet converted from the spot.

Payet hit a second into the second period after some good work from Bouna Sarr eventually fell to the captain who fired in from close range to set Marseille on their course.

Toulouse offered little thereafter, with a late flurry of goals adding to the gloss of victory. Valere Germain, who had been productive all evening latched onto a fine long ball to beat Baptiste Reynet while world champion Florian Thauvin came off the bench to secure the fourth.

OM encounter neighbours Nimes Olympique in the second round of fixtures next Sunday (21:00 CET).
