Olympique de Marseille routed EA Guingamp 4-0 on Sunday to move into second place in Ligue 1 ahead of a challenging week.

After the thrill of the comeback win over Monaco two weeks ago, OM knew a win would set them into the podium after both Monaco and Lyon dropped points at the weekend.

While three points was the objective, it didn’t look particularly likely against a stubborn Guingamp side for the best part of an hour. Only a Kostas Mitroglou header and a blocked Morgan Sanson volley presented the best opportunities for OM.

Guingamp were resolute in that period. Having collected 0 points from their first four games, the visitors were keen to get going here at the Velodrome before Thauvin broke their resolve with a looping ahead over Karl Johansson.

Dimitri Payet struck arguably the goal of the season minutes later with a stunning volley from distance that nestled into the corner. Thauvin made it three there after, latching on to Kevin Strootman’s pass with his trademark curling finish.

And Kostas Mitroglou ended the goal glut with a neat finish seven minutes from time as OM thrilled the crowd.

Next up for Rudi’s men is a Europa League game against Eintracht Frankfurt before a trip to Lyon next weekend.
