Olympique de Marseille suffered a disappointing defeat to Lyon on Sunday night, going down 4-2 to Bruno Genesio’s men.

After a painful week in the Europa League, perhaps there was an opportunity to produce another fine performance on the road to a direct competitor as was the case in Monaco 3 weeks ago.

And after a cagey start, OM were trailing. Tanguy Ndombele burst through the OM defence to set up Houssem Aouar.

Florian Thauvin equalised shortly after through Dimitri Payet’s fine pass to put OM on parity at the break.

The second half proved differently however as Lyon began to dominate. Bertrand Traore struck a fine finish to best Yohann Pele before firing in a scuffed shot soon after to put his side in a commanding position.

Nabil Fekir made it 4-1 after a penalty VAR review went against OM. But there was some solace in a consolation goal from Clinton Njie which was overshadowed by Duje Caleta Car’s red card in the closing stages.

OM remain 5th in the standings, ahead of Lyon with a home tie against Strasbourg to come on Wednesday.
