Olympique de Marseille were defeated 3-1 by SS Lazio on Thursday evening in the UEFA Europa League group stage.

In the middle of the three big games, OM were counting on the momentum gained from the win in Nice on Sunday, but with one eye on the big clash against PSG at the weekend.

And against Lazio, the onus was on the team to chalk up a first win in three attempts in this season’s group stage. And despite a cagey start, it was the visitors who got the opening goal.

From a corner, Wallace beat Mandanda to the punch and headed into a goal to give his side the lead in the 10th minute. Mandanda did redeem himself with two important stops against Ciro Immobile and Senad Lulic.

OM also had their changes, with Strakosha kept busy. Luiz Gustavo saw an effort parried, while Morgan Sanson also spurned a key chance.

Lazio got their second just before the hour when Felipe Caicedo struck. There was a glimmer of hope when Dimitri Payet struck an exquisite free-kick past the goalkeeper, but hopes were dashed in the 90th minute when Marusic restored Lazio’s two goal advantage.

Attention turns back to the league on Sunday with the big game of the season against Paris Saint-Germain at the Orange Velodrome.
