Olympique de Marseille secured a morale-boosting 3-1 win over EA Guingamp on Saturday afternoon at Stade du Roudourou.

OM won last weekend against Nimes and with Lyon winning on Friday night and Saint-Etienne up against Reims on Sunday, the visitors needed the three points here to maintain hope of a podium place.

Rudi Garcia’s men have had difficult trips to Brittany, not least last May’s 3-3 draw here - a result just before the Europa League final that ended up sealing the team’s 4th place finish. Indeed, today’s victory was OM’s first there in nearly 5 years.

The visitors started brightly and opened the scoring soon after kick-off. A neat pass from Dimitri Payet was well finished by Luiz Gustavo in the fourth minute, the Brazilian controlling the cross with a header before firing a volley past Marc Caillard.

OM were in complete domination in the first half with Thauvin and Germain spurning key chances. But on the 40th minute, the second goal came. Florian Thauvin’s cross picked out Lucas Ocampos who looped his header past the goalkeeper.

Guingamp, who are 19th mounted a strong response and they were rewarded when N’Gbakoto reduced the scoreline with a header. Goal-line technology would deny the side an equaliser just minutes later as OM held on.

Valere Germain struck in injury time with a deftly executed finish to settle any nerves at the death.

OM move into 4th place provisionally in the Ligue 1 standings. Nantes are the next visitors to the Orange Velodrome next weekend.
