Olympique de Marseille suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday night at the Orange Velodrome.

Rudi Garcia’s men fell to sixth place over the past week, but maintained slim hopes for European football if they managed to beat Bruno Genesio’s stuttering side.

A tense first half swung rapidly between both teams as Steve Mandanda denied Memphis Depay while Lucas Ocampos brought out a neat save from Anthony Lopes.

Lyon opened the scoring through Maxwell Cornet after 24 minutes but OM pushed back against their rivals to try and level the score.

The second half brought significant chances for the hosts - Ocampos, Thauvin, Gustavo, Sakai and Balotelli all saw chances spurned by an impressive Lopes as the Velodrome roared its side on.

But a red card for Duje Caleta-Car for bringing down his opponent Martin Terrier as a last man saw OM reduced to 10 men. With the game now at a disadvantage for the Olympiens, Lyon went for broke.

Moussa Dembele struck in the 84th minute to increase the score, while Cornet added a third two minutes from time.

OM remain sixth in the table and travel to Toulouse next weekend.
